Supporting our customers to live as independently as possible is a core part of Look Ahead’s work. Naturally, being able to use public transport to get around – whether getting to and from the shops or visiting friends and family – is an important part of independence.
With this in mind, staff from our Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Learning Disability and Autism Service teamed up with Daniel, who works as a Senior Accessibility Mentor at Great Western Railway (GWR).
Daniel initially came to the service and gave a presentation about accessible train travel, which included valuable information for customers about navigating the railway system.
After Daniel’s visit, the group met up with him again, to test their knowledge practically. The group took a train trip from Paddington to Reading, but also learned more about purchasing tickets, how to find help at the station, and reading travel boards, as well as tactile and braille maps.
The customers had a fantastic time, and now feel more confident to travel by train.
We would like to thank Daniel and the team at GWR for engaging with our customers so positively, and hope to see similar activities at other Look Ahead services as well.
