Marcus' Story

Marcus is the Relationship Manager at The Felix Project, a food redistribution charity that partners with Look Ahead to provide food for our customers.

The Felix Project fights food waste and hunger by rescuing good food that would otherwise be thrown away and delivering it to those who in need. Some of our suppliers include Waitrose, Wholefoods, Sainsbury’s, Ocado and Mindful Chef so you can be sure we certainly don’t scrimp on quality.

One of the best things about working for The Felix Project is the partnerships we have in the voluntary sector, for example with Look Ahead. We’ve been supporting Look Ahead services for around five years, and I’ve been enjoying watching our partnership go from strength to strength. I really admire the work Look Ahead does in helping people to stay off the streets, manage their mental health and wellbeing, and turn their lives around.

We currently provide nine Look Ahead sites with food deliveries, ensuring the people that live there and who are struggling with food insecurity have access to healthy and nutritious food.

In 2022 alone we have given them almost 34,000 kilograms of food. One of my favourite ways we have supported Look Ahead has been our Christmas Eve collection. Every Christmas, we deliver lots of food – generously donated by the likes of Fortnum & Mason and Daylesford Organic – to Look Ahead customers.

There have even been times when we’ve been able to hand out whole chickens and turkeys for customers to have for Christmas dinner. Dropping by to Look Ahead to hand over the food is always a highlight of my year.

I’ve really enjoyed bringing celebrity guests to meet customers and deliver food on Christmas Eve. So far we’ve introduced Chelsea footballer Reece James, England cricketer Monty Panesar and Sherwood and Walking Dead actor David Morrisey who came by twice.

In late 2022, we took our partnership with Look Ahead to new heights. We opened up, a new social food hub at Coventry Road to offer additional food to Look Ahead’s customers living in Tower Hamlets amid the ongoing cost of living crisis. The hub serves customers with meals and food parcels to enjoy every Thursday. It has been fantastic to see this project take off, and I’m very optimistic about what we can achieve together in the future.

Going forward, I am hopeful that Felix will be able to support Look Ahead further and deliver food to more services – there are currently five sites on our waiting list which we hope to start supplying as soon as possible. I would also love to see Look Ahead customers taking up volunteering opportunities at our depots and gaining valuable experience that they can use both in their work and personal lives.

Together we’re helping people as well as tackling the huge waste of food that exists in our society.
